All 291 Bridge Piers Completed for Mongolia-China Cross-Border Railway

Construction of all 291 bridge piers for the Gashuunsukhait-Gantsmod cross-border railway project in Khanbogd soum, Umnugovi Province, has been completed, marking 100 percent completion of this key structural component.

Overall Project Progress Reaches 49.27 Percent

Overall construction of the Gashuunsukhait-Gantsmod cross-border railway has reached 49.27 percent.

As part of the project, a total of 2,382 foundation piles are being manufactured and installed. All 291 lower crossbeams have also been produced.

Of the 594 bridge girders manufactured for the project, 296 have already been installed.

Officials said construction work is being accelerated with the aim of putting the railway into operation and beginning trial transportation in April 2027.

They also noted that there are currently no major issues affecting construction and that work on both the Mongolian and Chinese sides is proceeding according to schedule.

Railway Expected to Boost Mongolia’s Export Capacity

Once completed, the Gashuunsukhait-Gantsmod cross-border railway is expected to establish a new and strategically important rail corridor between Mongolia and China, strengthening bilateral trade and transportation links while significantly increasing Mongolia’s export capacity.

The railway is expected to have the capacity to transport up to 30 million tonnes of freight annually.

Economic estimates indicate that the project could potentially double export revenues and increase Mongolia’s state budget revenue by approximately USD 1.5 billion.

The project is also expected to create around 200 permanent jobs and 800 temporary jobs.

As Gashuunsukhait-Gantsmod is one of Mongolia’s major export gateways, the new railway is expected to increase border-crossing capacity while reducing transportation costs and delivery times.

The completion of all 291 bridge piers represents an important milestone in the project and provides the foundation for contractors, engineers and technical teams to accelerate the next phase of construction.

Minister of Economy and Development J. Enkhbayar and Minister of Road and Transport B. Delgersaikhan inspected the construction site on Thursday.
